Rebecca Adlington is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Great Britain.

Rebecca Adlington won two gold medals at the Beijing Games — 400m and 800m freestyle — making her the first British swimmer to win Olympic gold since 1988 and the first one to win two since 1908. Her 800m freestyle victory came in world-record time, as she broke Janet Evans' mark by more than two seconds.

Adlington earned a pair of bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships, but in 2011 she picked up a gold medal in the 800m freestyle and a silver in the 400m freestyle. She also earned a gold and silver medal at the 2008 Short-Course Worlds.

When she returned home from Beijing, Adlington was named an OBE — Officer of the Order of the British Empire — by Queen Elizabeth. In 2009 she was given the Laureus World Sports Awards Breakthrough of the Year Award. "This is amazing — it has topped off the best year of my life," she said in a London newspaper in 2009.

Adlington began swimming at age 4 in Mansfield, England, and six years later she started to enter competitions. She chose swimming because her two sisters were also in the sport. The pool in which she swam as a kid now bears her name. "It was a really big thing when they named it after me," she said, as quoted in her bio.

Adlington usually paints her nails in the colors of Great Britain for big international competitions … In 2004, Adlington was invited to Great Britain's training camp before the Athens Olympics. She was 15, and her job was to serve as the pacing partner for fellow freestyler Rebecca Cooke. Cooke never won an Olympic medal but earned 800m bronze at the 2003 World Championships … She lists her hobbies as shopping, listening to music and completing jigsaw puzzles.
