Richard Sammel stars in FX's drama series "The Strain" as Thomas Eichorst, a mysterious figure from Professor Abraham Setrakian's past whose re-emergence in New York is not a coincidence.

Richard Sammel was born in Heidelberg, Germany. His passion for his acting led him to garner credits all over Europe and enabled him to gather diversified experiences in film, television and theater productions. He studied music and drama in Hildesheim, acting and direction in Aix en Provence, and method acting with Susan Strasberg and Francesca de Sapio in Rome. His first performance on stage in 1981 at the local theater Hildesheim was followed by performances in France on independent stages and national theaters in 1983. From 1989 he worked with stage director Giorgio Barberio Corsetti in Rome and got to know Susan Strassberg. She enabled him his cinema debut in the leading role of "IL Piacere Delle Carni" by Barbara Barni.

In 1993, Sammel moved to Paris and got the leading role in the film version of the Brecht/Eisler opera "The Lindberghs Flight." Numerous film, television and theater productions in France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Canada and England followed. Sammel loves committed roles that require physical play, rhythm and timing, such as in "Taxi" by Luc Besson and "Casino Royale" by Martin Campbell. In the U.S., he was also seen in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds."

Sammel has been living in Paris and since 2007 also in Berlin. He is particularly interested in intimate theater-like stories in which the secrets of a character are visualized and the unconscious procedures of interpersonal relationships are accentuated.
