Rie Tanaka is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Japan. She is the 2012 Japanese Champion.

In March 2012 Rie Tanaka won the Japanese National Championships held in Tokyo, the first step in being selected for the 2012 Olympic Team. "I'm happy to win my first title," she told the Japan Times. "I won and I am pleased, but this is just a passing point to London.

At the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, there were three Tanaka's competing — Rie on the women's team, and both of her brothers — Yusuke and Kazuhito — on the men's team. While the women's team finished seventh, the men took home the silver medal behind China.

Tanaka finished fifth in team and 17th in the all-around competition at 2010 Worlds in Rotterdam, but took home one impressive prize — the Longines Prize for Elegance — awarded to a male (Philipp Boy of Germany) and female for the most remarkable elegance throughout the world championships. Tanaka took home a trophy, Longines watch, and five thousand dollars.

She was voted Japan's most beautiful woman in 2010 in a poll launched by Japan's MSN website.

While studying at the Nippon Sports Science University she attempted to make the Beijing Olympic Team, but did not qualify. After graduating from the university she considered quitting to become a teacher, but could not give up gymnastics and looks to make her Olympic debut in London.

Tanaka began gymnastics at six years old — her mother was her coach. She struggled early in her career with motivation and an ankle injury that eventually required surgery, but since graduating from college, her results have steadily improved both nationally and internationally. Tanaka qualified for her first world championships at age 23.
