After defending their U.S. title, Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker struggled at Worlds, finishing 11th. They later announced a coaching change, moving from Colorado Springs to the Los Angeles area
McLaughlin and Brubaker had stated that their goal was to win a medal at the 2009 Worlds but revised their goals after others' expectations started to get to them. Both said the pressure of being reigning national champions was unexpected and defending their national title in 2009 was "relief...sweet relief," McLaughlin says. "They say that it's the hardest thing to do, that you can win five national medals but the first repeat, the second time's always the hardest. But we made it through."
In their first season together, McLaughlin and Brubaker had immediate success on the junior international circuit, winning the Junior Grand Prix Final and Junior Worlds. They first crossed paths when McLaughlin was 11 and Brubaker was 17. Says McLaughlin, "I remember thinking that he was wearing too much hair gel." Both were searching for partners in early 2006 and immediately clicked during a tryout. "We were flying across the ice, doing lifts and, kind of skating as one, so we have a natural ability together," McLaughlin says. The team qualified for the 2008 Worlds, but could not compete because McLaughlin was too young.
Brubaker begged his mother for lessons, then threw a tantrum after his mother paid and sent him on the ice. She wouldn't let him leave the ice, and soon Brubaker was begging to stay. He is named for Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, even though his family has no connection with the school.
