Russell Westbrook is a basketball player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

After his senior national team debut at the 2010 World Championships, Russell Westbrook makes his Olympic debut in London, where the U.S. looks to defend the gold medal it won in 2008. Westbrook came off the bench for all nine games at the 2010 Worlds, but averaged 19.4 minutes, fifth on the team. In that time he put up 9.1 points and 2.6 assists (both third on the squad). He was joined on the 2010 team by Kevin Durant, his teammate on the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder who will also be in London.

Selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics, who moved to Oklahoma City prior to the 2008-09 season, Westbrook quickly became one of the league's best point guards, as he was named to the 2008-09 NBA All-Rookie First Team. He started 65 of 82 games that year, and has started every game since. A two-time All-Star, Westbrook was named to the All-NBA Second Team after the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. He is an attacking guard who twice has led the league in turnovers, but he averaged a career-high 23.6 points this past season, which ranked fifth in the league. The Thunder has advanced to the postseason in three of Westbrook's four seasons, winning the Western Conference in 2012 but falling to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

Westbrook starred at UCLA for two seasons before entering the NBA Draft. He only averaged 3.4 points in 9.0 minutes a game as a freshman, but those numbers jumped to 12.7 points in 33.8 minutes as a sophomore in 2007-08. He also led the team with 4.3 assists per game as the Bruins advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Westbrook was the 2008 Pac-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and the 1,318 minutes he played that season were the most by a Bruin since 1979 (when minutes began being tracked as a statistic).

The son of Russell Westbrook Sr. and Shannon Horton, the younger Russell has one younger brother, Raynard. At Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, Calif., Westbrook earned All-State Third Team honors as a senior, when he averaged 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.3 assists per game. Leuzinger boasted a 25-4 overall record that season and advanced to California's Division I-AA quarterfinals. Westbrook scored 30 or more points eight different times in 2005-06, with a career-high of 51.
