Here is an interview with Savannah Sturges:
Who is your primary cooking inspiration?
Rachael Ray initially inspired me to cook. I loved her 30-minute meal concept
because the food she made was affordable and realistic for a home cook to learn.
What are your favorite food blogs (besides your own)?
How Sweet It Is and Smitten Kitchen.
What is your favorite/least favorite dish to eat?
I am obsessed with a local pizzeria called Urbn that serves a thin crust a mashed potato pizza with fresh mozzarella and prosciutto. I could eat a whole pizza by myself! My least favorite dish would probably be Indian Curry. When I lived in San Francisco during college there was a take-out Indian restaurant on my block that I ordered from weekly. I think I ate too much curry back then, so now I don't care for it as much.
What is your favorite/least favorite dish to cook?
I love cooking steak. I make a peppercorn crusted steak that is to-die-for. I usually get a New York strip and sear it hard for about 3 minutes on each side and it's a perfect medium rare. Super easy, fast and delicious! As for my least favorite dish to cook, I make these brownies that are filled with butter, melted chocolate and coffee. They are so good and chocolaty, but they take forever to make because you have to melt the chocolate and incorporate it two different times and mix ingredients separately. It gets messy and creates a lot of dirty dishes. But, I have to say they are worth the work.
What is your favorite go-to dish to bring to a potluck?
Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad. Everyone I know loves it!
What is your favorite/least favorite type of cuisine and why?
I love Italian and Mexican food. I love Mexican food because that's what I grew up eating, and I love Italian food because I love pasta. I could eat any kind of pasta every day of the week and be a very happy woman.
What travel destinations have you either been to or want to travel to for food inspiration?
Every time I travel, food is central to my trip. I plan my sightseeing excursions around food sightseeing. I like to get a feel for the local cuisine and I want to be sure I try the food that's famous in that particular country/city. I have traveled through many parts of Mexico and Europe and I have been inspired by the food I have had in all of those locations. I really want to travel to Asia to become more familiar with Asian cuisine.
What are your top 3 songs to cook to?
"Natalie" by Bruno Mars, "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons, and "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake.
Why did you want to be a contestant?
I wanted to try out for "MasteChef" because I have a love and passion for food and cooking. Cooking is my therapy and relaxation after a hard day. It brings people together, and some of my best memories are eating home cooked meals with family and friends. Because I know my passion runs deep, I wanted to see if that could take me somewhere. I am firm believer that you never know what could have been until you try it and put yourself out there.
What is your favorite comfort food and why?
Macaroni and cheese!
Pick 3 words that define what meals with friends and family mean to you.
Festive, jolly, delightful.
