The son of volunteer ski patrol parents, two-time Olympian Scott Macartney was a four-event skier growing up in Washington state, but he
The hardest working man in the business, Macartney had completed a successful return to top form on the World Cup after recovering from severe head trauma he suffered during a 2008 crash in the Kitzbuehel downhill. The proof: Scoring points last season in Beaver Creek, Lake Louise, Val Gardena and a career best at the tricky Stelvio downhill in Bormio. At the start of the January speed swing, "Mac" was poised to turn up the intensity for his return to Kitzbuehel when a freak crash at Wengen ended his second straight season prematurely, this time with a torn ACL in his left knee. "If you're going to come back, you've got to put everything in and that's what I did," Macartney said. "I had to have to have a lot of faith and a lot of trust to get back to where I was last season, but I also had to put in the hard work, both physically and mentally to get back into race mode. I was there." No stranger to the recovery scene, Macartney was back at it throughout the summer prep period with Vancouver, what he considers a home Olympics, on the horizon.
On skis at 3, Macartney started racing at 7 at Crystal Mountain where his parents were (and remain) volunteer Ski Patrol members on weekends. A strong slalom skier, he was Western J3 slalom gold medalist in '93, J2 SL champ in '94, silver medalist in slalom at the '95 J1-2 Western Junior Olympics, J1 SL champ in '96, and national junior super G champ in '97. By the '99 season, he was a fledgling downhiller, grabbing the bronze medal at '98 Junior Worlds in Megeve, France.
In 2009, a torn ACL in his left knee following a crash at the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen, Swizerland ended his season in January. In 2008, he suffered severe head trauma during a crash off the finish jump at Kitzbuehel, Austria. He had hip surgery after the 2007 season to fix range of motion restrictions (torn labrum and cartilage damage plus removing bone spurs) which had him limping through the end of the season. In 2001, he suffered a concussion and a fractured tibia plateau in late-season crash that ended his season. In 2000, he had patella tendon surgery at midseason.
He likes mountain biking, surfing and sushi. He has a degree in economics from Dartmouth. He says, "In ski racing you take the tactics and line of motorcycle racing, freeze the surface and drop 3,000 feet over 2.5 miles."
