Sean Penn stars in Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," opposite Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. The film follows the unraveling of a family in Texas, centering on the complex relationship between eldest brother Jack and his repressed father Mr. O'Brien (Pitt). Sean Penn portrays the adult version of Jack, who has grown into a confused and disillusioned man, still wrestling with the trauma's that he endured as a youth.

Two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn is an American film icon, with an acclaimed career spanning nearly three decades. Penn has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in "Dead Man Walking," "Sweet and Lowdown," and "I Am Sam," and he won his first Oscar in 2003 for his searing, dangerous performance in Clint Eastwood's drama "Mystic River," and his second in 2009 for Gus Van Sant's "Milk," where Penn portrayed gay rights advocate Harvey Milk. His performance in "Milk" also won Penn awards from The Screen Actors Guild, New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Penn's other honors include being a two-timer winner of Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for "Hurlyburly" and "21 Grams." His numerous other film credits include "Fair Game," "The Thin Red Line," and, in his breakout performance, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

Penn's feature film directorial debut arrived with 1991's "The Indian Runner," which he also wrote and produced. He has also directed 1995's "The Crossing Guard," 2001's "The Pledge," starring Jack Nicholson, and "Into the Wild," the acclaimed adaptation of Jon Krakauer's best-selling non-fiction book. "Into the Wild" appeared on many top ten lists in 2007.

Penn's numerous stage credits include Alfred Hayes' "Girl on the Via Flaminia" and Albert Innarurato's "Earthworms in Los Angeles." On Broadway, Penn performed in Kevin Heelan's "Heartland" and John Byrne's "Slab Boys." He has also appeared in David Rabe's "Hurlyburly," at the Westwood Playhouse. Most recently, Penn starred opposite Nick Nolte and Woody Harrelson in "The Late Henry Moss," written and directed by Pulitizer Prize-winner Sam Shepard.

Penn is also an accomplished journalist (he has written for Time, Rolling Stone, The Nation, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among others) and a noted humanitarian. He assisted in the immediate aftermath of both Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake-ravaged Haiti, and in January 2010, Penn founded the J/P Haitan Relief Organization.
