Serena da Conceicao from "Project Runway" is one of the contestants in Season 9 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. She is a 31-year-old fashion designer from Brooklyn, New York. She was raised though in Kingston, New York. She previously worked as a custom tailor and patternmaker, and a design apprentice in making leather and lace garments.
The first garment Serena da Conceicao ("Project Runway 9") ever made was a glass-bead applique tulle genie costume with gold lame that
she designed when she was just five years old for the Rio Carnival. She says she has always had a sense of belonging with fashion design and feels most at ease when working with fabrics and sketching. She has an associate's degree in fashion design from FIDM, San Francisco. She also did a three-year apprenticeship with a custom leather and bridal design studio. While working at CLIFT NYC in 2005 or 2006, she was nominated for an Ecco Domani award.
Her favorite designers are Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Madeline Vionnet, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Claire McCardell, and Rodarte. Serena considers great black shoes that can be dressed up or down, to be a fashion must. She says her design strengths are draping, conceptualizing, problem-solving, and leading a team. Her weakness? Making dresses too short. Over the years, her designs have been influenced by Vanessa Beecroft and Egon Schiele, as well as people-watching on city streets. When she's designing, Serena likes listening to Jordin Sparks, Sol Seppy, Arcade Fire, Astor Piazzola, Joan as Policewoman, Mos Def, and sometimes just NPR.
