The son of an archaeologist and the grandson of American surgeon Charles McBurney, Simon followed his studies at Cambridge University by training for the theater at the Jacques Lecoq Institute in Paris.
McBurney also has a number of TV and film acting credits, including a recurring role on BBC's "The Vicar of Dibley" as Cecil the Choirmaster; Ridley Scott's feature film "Body of Lies"; "The Manchurian Candidate," starring Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep; "The Last King of Scotland," opposite Forest Whitaker; "Friends with Money"; "The Golden Compass," starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig; and "The Duchess." McBurney also wrote and executive produced "Mr. Bean's Holiday." He also recently voiced the character of Kreacher in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1."
In 2008, he was ranked 31st on the Telegraph's list of the 100 most powerful people in British culture.
