Steve Nyman is an alpine skiing athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Judging Steven Nyman by his laid-back demeanor, you would think that he made a living cruising the ocean waves, not icy mountain slopes at 80 mph. "A surfer trapped in a skier's body" by his own admission, he has achieved most of his success in the fastest Alpine speed event: the downhill. His lone World Cup victory came in the downhill at Val Gardena in 2006, as did his two national championships. With speed
At the 2010 Games, Nyman's birthday, February 12, will fall on the day of the Opening Ceremony. However, in 2006, his birthday fell on the day of his Olympic debut race, the men's downhill. After posting the third best time in the final training run the day before, Nyman started envisioning the best birthday present an athlete can get: an Olympic gold medal. "I was like, 'This is destiny! All you control is yourself, and everything'll be fine.' But all these thoughts would bombard my head. I've never had that mental battle before. That's when I realized the magnitude of the Olympics. The world's watching." He finished 19th, over two seconds behind the winner, France's Antoine Deneriaz.
Nyman grew up at the Sundance Resort in Utah, the mountain ranch outside of Park City owned by actor Robert Redford. Nyman's father, Scott, ran the ski school there when Nyman and his three brothers were boys, providing them with the optimal winter playground, but it was actually his mother, ski instructor Becky, who taught him how to ski. As far as interaction with Redford goes, Nyman did landscaping work at the actor's home, trimming hedges and mowing the lawn to earn some extra cash for skiing and travel. The Nyman parents later opened a ski shop called Nyman Ski and Sport, and Redford once bought a pair of sealskin ski outfits from the shop.
Early in his career, Nyman followed what he called the "Popeye Power Diet," where he would eat spinach in every meal over several weeks. "I would run 10 miles, lift, bike for 50 miles and still not be tired." In 2008, he bought his first house, in nearby Heber City, and one of the first things he did was organize a garden plot. Although first-year yields of plums and berries were low, he grew plentiful supplies of onions, carrots, beets, zucchinis, squash, tomatoes and his old staple, spinach.
When the 2002 Olympic Games came to his home state of Utah, Nyman got to attend the Opening Ceremony and the men's Alpine combined event. Greatly motivated by the experience, he won a gold in the slalom and silver in the combined at the Junior World Championships two weeks later. The combined champion that day, Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, would eventually become one of the world's best all-around skiers.
