Tom Roberts from "Coal" stars in the Spike TV reality docu-series about coal miners.

Tom Roberts and his partner, Mike Crowder, own Cobalt Mine in Westchester, West Virginia. They face pressure every minute of every day not only to keep the mine up and running, but also to keep their workers safe in a highly combustible environment where one wrong move could prove deadly. The duo leads more than 40 machine operators, foremen, electricians and coal truck drivers in one of the most dangerous workplaces on the planet, underneath the mountains of Appalachia.

Tom Roberts is a loyal family man and requires the support of his loved ones to tackle the daily demands of the mine. Tom's commitment to the job is reflected in a mining career that's spanned more than 45 years. He has seen his share of accidents and knows that any mistake can bring disaster.

A college educated engineer and army veteran, Roberts has always wanted to be what he is now—an independent mine owner. Although Tom enjoys the independence of running the mine, he says the most worrisome part of the job is the responsibility for worker safety in such a dangerous industry. Tom's had a rollercoaster career in which mining has made him a millionaire several times over and also left him bankrupt. The Cobalt Coal mine is Tom's shot to go out on top.
