Trevor Marsicano is a speed skating athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Trevor Marsicano became the surprise star of the 2009 World Single Distance Championships, where he was the most decorated skater with four medals. His most impressive performance was in the 1000m, which he won, beating Olympic champion Shani Davis. Marsicano was second to Davis in the 1500m and also took bronze in the 5000m and team pursuit—all in just his second World Cup season. Now a gold-medal contender in each of those events in Vancouver, Mariscano recalls discussing his dreams with his coach more than six years ago. "I said, 'Well, it would be cool to be at the Olympics.' But I didn't realize I'd be this close."

Since 2008-09 was his second full World Cup season, Marsicano was not on the short list of contenders at the start. But he finished the season second overall in the 1500m (behind Davis) and sixth in the 5000m (ahead of Torino champ Chad Hedrick). At the final World Cup event in Salt Lake City, Marsicano broke the world record in the 1000m, becoming the first man to skate under 1:07 in that event. But just a few minutes later, Davis lowered the record again to win the event.

In the week between his world-record skate and the 2009 Worlds, Marsicano secured two sponsors: Kia automobiles and G4S, a Dutch security company. His parents negotiated the deals, though he has since signed with an agent. Financing his career has always been a struggle for the family, with expenses reaching nearly $100,000 for the year, though they have made it work. One summer, Marsicano worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant in Milwaukee.

In December 2004, during a World Junior Championship short track qualifier, Marsicano was attempting a pass when the skater in front of him slipped. As he went down, his skate slammed into Marsicano's right leg, cutting him to the bone. "After that of course I went down," he said. "And I looked down and I just see a white bar, which was my femur." Marsicano lost half the blood volume in his body and had to undergo two hours of emergency surgery. He was off the ice for three months and didn't regain his full strength until nearly a year after the accident. And he still has a long scar on the inside of his leg to remind him.

Marsicano and his coach, Paul Marchese, have a unique arrangement: Marsicano trains in Milwaukee, and Marchese is based in upstate New York, so they communicate through phone and e-mail. Marchese—who is also the skate technician for China's short track program—and Marsicano have not let the distance interfere with their relationship. "There's definitely an art to it," Marsicano says. "Me telling him how I feel, him giving me feedback on things I should change."

Now based in Milwaukee, Marsicano trains at the Pettit National Ice Center, an Olympic training facility. Pettit is also home base for Shani Davis, and although they never train together, they are close friends. Marsicano lives alone in an apartment, in Wauwatosa outside Milwaukee, which he said was an adjustment, but now he enjoys having his own space. And with plenty of other skaters in the area, he always has someone to hang out with. Marsicano travels home to Ballston Spa several times a year, in the summer and on holidays, though his time there is limited because of training.

Marchese Racing provides skates for many elite skaters. His custom-made boots are in high demand, but each one is made by Paul or his wife Liz—with one exception. Marsicano has worked at the shop to pay for his skates, making him the only other person who has ever been allowed to work there. "Anything you see on the boot I've cut," Mariscano said. "And I've done some carving work. I've done some of the stitching. I do a little bit of everything, whatever they may need."

Before speed skating, Marsicano played ice hockey for eight years. Though he always liked it, Marsicano says he realized that he wasn't big enough to compete, and at age 13 decided to try skating. He was first introduced to the sport when former Olympic coach Pat Maxwell made a presentation to his third-grade class. Mariscano's career began at the Lake Placid Olympic Oval, which is about an hour and a half drive from his house. He excelled at long and short track but decided on long track after 2007 World Junior Championships, where he won the 3000m and was third overall. The 2007-08 season was his first full long track season.

Marsicano has put his education on hold as he focuses on the Olympics, though he plans to continue in school. He was home schooled by his parents for high school, which he completed in 2006. Marsicano battled depression in middle school, largely caused by bullies who picked on him relentlessly, and by eighth grade told his parents he didn't want to go back to school. Starting his freshman year, his parents, Randy and Linda, kept him home. Lewis works as a bank auditor, and Linda is a medical transcriptionist. Marsicano has a younger sister, Samantha, who is studying graphic design.
