Tucker Fredricks is competing in the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver in speed skating.
Tucker Fredricks made his Olympic debut in Torino, finishing 25th in the 500m. Since then, Fredricks has climbed the international ranks to become one of the best sprinters in the world. His best season came in 2006-07, when he won the overall World Cup title in the 500m. He also took bronze in the event at the 2007 World Single Distance Championships. A gold for Fredricks in the 500m would continue a streak by American skaters, after Casey FitzRandolph won in 2002 and Joey Cheek in 2006. Fredricks is friends with both FitzRandolph and Cheek, who was his roommate in Torino. Fredricks said took away several lessons from Torino, including that if Cheek could win, so could he. "Something just clicked," Fredricks said, and he became completely focused on accomplishing that goal.
Fredricks is engaged to former Japanese skater Eriko Seo. The two met in Inzell, Germany, at a World Cup event and began dating in the summer of 2005. Seo still lives in her hometown of Obihiro, in Hokkaido, and Fredricks spends a month or two visiting her every summer. Fredricks and Seo competed together in Torino, an experience Fredricks called "awesome." They have not set a date for the wedding, but will wait until after Vancouver.
Despite speaking different languages, Fredricks and Japanese sprinter Joji Kato developed a friendship on the World Cup circuit. The made their debuts at the same event, and got along well. "We just like to party together," Fredricks said. "After the competition is over we just like to go out and have a good time." Since they first met, Kato has learned some English and Fredricks some Japanese, but they still don't let the language barrier get in the way.
Hailing from Wisconsin, Fredricks began skating when he was 2. Originally a hockey player, Fredricks started winning "fastest skater" competitions at youth hockey tournaments when he was 9 and eventually tried speed skating. By the time he was 12, Fredricks realized he was too small to play hockey and decided to focus on long track full time. After graduating from high school, Fredricks dedicated himself to speed skating and moved to Salt Lake to train with other members of the national team. He has lived there since then.
Off the ice, Fredricks likes to play video games and poker. His favorite music is rap and his favorite movies are "Stepbrothers," "Old School," "Dumb and Dumber" and "American Movie." He also plays a lot of video games, and brings a handheld system with him when he travels.
