Valerie Mayen from "Project Runway" is one of the designers competing in Season 8 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. Valerie ("Project Runway 8") is a full-time fashion designer, educator and freelance illustrator. She currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio, but grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is 28 years old.
The first garment Valerie Mayen ever made was a navy polka-dot sleeveless dress with pink buttons. She first realized she had potential as a designer when she was in junior high and turned her generic, bland clothes into things that she actually wanted to wear. She has a BFA in illustration from the Cleveland Institute of Art, 2005. She has worked as a waitress, nanny, bartender, tabletop opera singer, and NASA Space Lab test subject. She won the Creative Workforce Fellowship in 2009 and the COSE Arts Business and Innovation Award in 2010.
When she's designing, she likes listening to La Roux, Discovery, Little Boots, Junior Boy, David Bowie, The Cars, Sleater Kinney and Ryan Adams. She says boots are a fashion must—preferably slimming, knee-length leather boots with a small heel. Among her design influences, she counts the marriage of mod vintage looks with contemporary cutting-edge style.
Her favorite designers are Rudi Gernreich, Stefano Pilati and Leanne Marshall.
