Wuershan is the director of "The Butcher, The Chef and the Swordsman." A highly sought-after television commercial director in China, Wuershan made his early career from his mastery of aesthetics. To help create his vision for this project, the director called on his long-time television commercial collaborator, Hao Yi, to assume the art director role. Hao Yi was responsible for the characters' costume designs and makeup. Together, the two designed the visual themes for this feature. As the pair describes, their thematic goals were both to reflect "some far and deserted place" that is also "rough and magical."

Wuershan was born in Huhehaote, Inner Mongolia. He studied oil painting in China's Central Institution of Fine Arts before he entered the School of Directing at the Beijing Film Academy. After graduating, Wuershan got his start in TV commercial production. From there, he went on to become one of China's most successful television commercial directors and founded his company, One Productions.

As an established TV commercial director, Wuershan has received awards in various festivals including the China Advertising Festival, Taiwan Times Advertising Festival, Huawen Advertising Festival and the 4A Advertising Festival. Modern Advertising Magazine named him among the "Top 10 Creative Directors and Producers in Advertising" in 2005, and recognized him as one of "China's 30 Best TV Commercial Directors" in 2005 and 2006. His creativity and technical excellence in TV commercial directing has also earned him international recognition; his works have been featured in Archive Magazine and other international advertising publications.

Wuershan also lends his artistic expression to fine arts. His works have been exhibited in the U.S., U.K., Japan, German, Italy and Korea, among others. He has also published and produced several Chinese avant-garde music recordings, which have been influential in China's music scene. "The Butcher, The Chef, and the Swordsman" is Wuershan's feature film directing debut.
